1. Who are Sid & Marty Krofft?

[The following is taken from the "Land of the Lost" series two, press kit]

For five generations the name Krofft has symbolized innovative quality
entertainment. Over the past twenty years, brothers Sid and Marty
Krofft have packaged some of Hollywood's most popular performers,
writers, and directors and assembled a brilliant group of technical
personnel. This ensemble has brought them success in television and
motion picture productions and in live attractions for night clubs,
amusements parks, arena shows and World's Fairs.

Continuing as the fifth generation in this line of puppeteers, the
Krofft story represents a lifetime devoted to entertaining. The older
brother, Sid started his show business career in the early 1940's. At
the tender age of ten, Sid toured with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and
Bailey Circus, and also toured with legendary performers such as Judy
Garland, Frank Sinatra and Sonja Henie.

Marty Krofft waited until the age of fifteen to join his brother on the
road, but when he did the young team quickly made an impact. In 1957,
they created the famous "Les Poupees de Paris" playing live at four
World's Fairs and Las Vegas, enchanting over nine million people.

  * Extra Note:

Sid and Marty also designed the Atlanta Falcons mascot, as
well as the "Kool Aid" pitcher.

     * Kaptain Kool was a Fonzie Knock-off. They were sort of the
"Banana Splts" of the Supershow, don't you think? I recall a
5th Kong who always rhymed the last word of his sentences("You
can skate, Kate!"). His name was Flatbush and his outfit
was pink and his hat sported a long Turkey feather. All of the
Kongs' songs were written by the Osmonds(sung by them too?).

5. Lidsville

5a. Description:

After watching a magic show at Six Flags Over Texas, a young boy
name Mark went back stage to meet the magician (Merlo). When he
arrived back stage, the magician was gone. While snooping around,
Mark watched the magician's hat grow enourmous. He climbed up on top
and fell in. He ended up in a land called "Lidsville"...a land of
    hat people.

The show is all about how the "good hats" of Lidsville, along with
Weenie the Geenie, try to help Mark get back to the "real world",
while the evil Hoo Doo and his "bad hats" try to stop them.

5b. The Lidsville Theme Song: ( Lyrics by Sid Krofft )

In the middle of the summer, in the middle of a park,
There began a great adventure for a boy whose name was Mark.
He had come to see the magic man, along with all the children, and
twas so began the day that Mark was never to forget.

He performed all sorts of miricles, and Mark was so impressed
that when the time arrived to go he lagged behind the rest
then quietly he did return, the secret of the had to learn,
but everyone had gone away and darkness held its breath.

The moment that he touched the hat the room began to glow,
And as he put it down and ran the hat began to grow, and grow,
and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow,
    and grow,........and grow.

He was stunned and he was facinated, still he had to see
There was something deep inside the had, what could that something be?
Then cautiously each step he took, he climbed up on the brim to look,
And all at once the hat began to shake, and rock,...'Lookout!'

                    [Hideous Laughter]

Falling, falling, into the hat he fell,
    Spinning, turning, whirling, twirling....Down.....Down.....

And when he looked into the skies, he couldn't believe his ears or eyes...

    Lidsville is the Koo-Koo-Kookiest,
    Lidsville is the Ki-Ki-Kickiest,
    Lidsville is the Groo-Groo-Grooviest
Lidsville is the living end friend.

And if you have a chance to go-go there
    You'll be glad you did...cause
Everyone who comes to Lidsville really flips his lid!

[evil laugh] "How's that for a topper!?!"

5c. Cast:
    Butch Patrick ..................... Mark
Charles Nelson Reilly ............. Hoo Doo
Billie Hayes ...................... Weenie the Geenie

5d. Miscellaneous Facts:
    Number of Episodes: 17
    Original Network : ABC
    Air Date : 09/11/71 - 01/01/73
    Rerun : 09/08/73 - 08/31/74

    * BILLIE HAYES: [See Pufnstuf]

    * CHARLES NELSON REILLY:
In the sixties, CHARLES NELSON REILLY made a lasting impression
in "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." In the 70's, most people knew
CHARLES NELSON REILLY as that guy who traded snappy banter with
Brett Sommers on "Match Game." Few recall his portrayal of the
evil magician Hoodoo on "Lidsville." These days CHARLES is
actively involved with traveling productions of Broadway
comedies, and finds himself on the road, directing, for most of
	the year.

    * BUTCH PATRICK:
Fans of Eddie Munster were delighted to catch an all-grown-up
BUTCH PATRICK resurfacing in the mid-70's as the star of
	"Lidsville."

After the show ended, BUTCH continued to act, mostly landing
bit-parts on television shows. These days BUTCH lives in
Austin, Texas (or St. Petersburg, Florida), and spends his time
touring colleges and universities around the country to speak
about his life in "the business." In addition, he made a
cameo appearance in a "Munsters" TV movie which aired on Fox
        in the fall of '95.

6. H. R. Pufnstuf

6a. Description:

A children's fantasy series set at Living Island, with Jimmy,
Witchiepoo, and the Krofft Puppets (one of whom was H. R.
Pufnstuf). The series spawned a 1970 theatrical film. [McNeil]

6b. H. R. Pufnstuf Theme Song:

                      H.R. Pufnstuf
Who's your friend when things get rough?
                      H.R. Pufnstuf
Can't do a little, 'cuz he can't do enough.

                      Once upon a summertime,
                      Just a dream from yesterday,
A boy and his magic, golden flute,
Heard a boat from off the bay:
"Come and play with me, Jimmy,
                      Come and play with me.
And I will take you on a trip
                      Far across the see-eeeeeee-eea!"

But the boat belonged to a kooky old witch,
Who had in mind the flute to snitch.
From her Vroom-Broom in the sky,
                      She watched her plan materialize.
                      She waved her wand.
                      The beautiful boat was gone.
                      The sky grew dark.
                      The sea grew rough.
The boat sailed on and on and on and ooooon.

                      But Pufnstuf was watching, too,
And knew exactly what to do.
He saw the witch's boat attack,
And how the boy was fighting back.
He called his Racer Rescue Crew,
                      As often they'd rehearsed.
And off to save the boy they flew...
                         {But who would get there first?!}

Jimmy washed up on the shore,
Puf arrived to save the day,
Which made the witch so mad and sore,
She shook her fist and screamed awaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy.

                      H.R. Pufnstuf
Who's your friend when things get rough.
                      H.R. Pufnstuf
Can't do a little, 'cuz he can't do enough.

Thanks to John Chaneski <chaneski@ix.netcom.com> for originally
supplying words to the theme song.

    * HOLLINGSWORTH MORSE directed the PufnStuf series, as well as
      the feature film.

    * In the TV series of HR there are two different Pufnstuf's.
(Actually three). One Pufnstuf has lips. Actually a faint line
around his mouth. They are most noticeable in the "Kite" episode
and the Saturday Morning CD. Another has arms that move and a
head that doesn't move (unless he runs or jumps) and another with
stationary arms and a mouth that moves. Quite easy to look for
once you know. This ranks up there with Witchiepoo's nose. That
seems to change with every closeup. It's fun to look for.

    * If Jimmy can't escape from Living Island how come Pufnstuf was on
      "The Brady Bunch Hour"??

    * Buttons were used as money on Living Island.

    * The Murmurs have done a cover of "H.R. Pufnstuf" theme song
featured on an album called Saturday Morning.

    * Witchiepoo's song: "Oranges poranges, who says, oranges poranges,
who says, oranges poranges, who says--there ain't no rhyme
      for oranges!"

    * Originally, H.R. Pufnstuf was going to be a Western, that is
      why he wears cowboy boots.

    * H. R. Pufnstuf The Movie was released in 1970.

    * A new H. R. Pufnstuf Movie is currently in the works.

    * BILLIE HAYES:
To this day, Billie Hayes' co-stars rave about her performance
as Witchiepoo on "H.R. Pufnstuf." Jack Wild insists, "She
should have won an Emmy!" Billie was Mammie Yokum in the
movie "Li'l Abner", and also popped up in a role as a nun
in the "Tabitha", the 1977 sequel to "Bewitched".
Her most memorable post-Krofft TV role was that of O'Reilly
on "General Hospital." These days, Billie spends her time
acting on stage, predominantly in the Los Angeles area, where she resides.

    * JACK WILD:
JACK WILD made the girls swoon as The Artful Dodger in
"Oliver!" and continued to do so as Jimmy on "H.R. Pufnstuf."
Shortly after completing the series, and the full-length
feature film based on the show (one year later ), JACK
returned to England to continue acting. He has been doing so steadily
ever since. Here in America, he has been seen in "Robin Hood:
Prince of Thieves" and in a small role on an episode of
"Unsolved Mysteries" se veral years ago. These days he is
mainly focusing on stage performances in London.

    * LENNIE WEINRIB also co-wrote the TV series with Paul Harrison and
sometimes ROBERT RIDOLPHI. As he was replaced in the feature
film version it probably explains his absence. Pufnstuf and
Orson both sound vastly different in the film.

Also LENNIE WEINRIB can be seen in episode 11 of "The Munsters"
He plays a crook. A photo of him appears in The Munsters book
      by Steve Cox.

    * Freddy The Magic Flute was stolen from the Sid & Marty Krofft
Pictures Warehouses, located in Sun Valley, California sometime
during the week of September 4, 1995.

As of February 1996, I have not been informed of its return.

    * Pufnstuf Episodes:

      Episode 01..........................The Magic Path
Jimmy and Freddie are captured by the evil Witchiepoo
       and trapped on Living Island

7b. The Lost Saucer Theme Song:

Out of the sky and out of time,
Coming to see all that they can find,
No where to go, Fi and Fum,
    They've been to the moon,
Now they've been to the sun,

    Please, Please take me along...

   Now Listen...
    From the future of time,
    They came to see,
How the world used to be,
But something went wrong deep inside,
And they can't get off this crazy ride

    Please, Please someone help us,

Where are we going in the Lost Saucer,
Somebody help us in the Lost Saucer,
Where are we going in the Lost Saucer,
Somebody help us in the Lost Saucer,

8a. Description:

Live-action Saturday-morning series with two brothers that took in
a refugee sea monster (Sigmund) and helped him elude the other
members of his monstrous family. [McNeil]

8b. Sigmund and the Sea Monsters Theme Song:

             --- FRIENDS ---

[Sigmund, you're a rotten sea monster]
             [Sigmund you're through!]
             [Scram, get outta here.]

(Verse 1) There's nothing like a day out on the beach,
When all it does is rain.
You need somebody else to make,
             The Sun come out again.

When you find that special someone,
             You never expected too.
It'll make you believe in magic,
It could change your life for you.

             Talk about,
                friends, friends, friends.
             Knockin' at you're door,
                friends, friends, friends.
             Thats what friends are for,
Friends when you're young or old,
             Everybody needs,
                friends, friends, friends.

             Now,
                friends, friends, friends.
             What's it all about?
                friends, friends, friends.
             Can't live without,
             Friends won't let you down,
             You gotta have,
                friends, friends, friends.

(Verse 2) I must admit my life has changed,
Since you came on the sceen.
And everything is twice as nice,
If you know what I mean.

             I can't change the way I feel,
             And wouldn't if I could.
             I never had someone before,
Who made me fell so good.

             Now,
                friends, friends, friends.
             What's it all about?
                friends, friends, friends.
             Can't live without,
             Friends won't let you down,
             You gotta have,
                friends, friends, friends.

             Talk about,
                friends, friends, friends.
             Knockin' at you're door,
                friends, friends, friends.
             Thats what friends are for,

             Everybody needs,
                friends, friends, friends...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
This is an alternative theme song that 'may' be from the
second season. This has been provided by Aaron Brockbank.
    <shadow@scorch.hna.com.au>

Let me tell you a tale, a very strange tale,
about two boys that were searching one day:
On a very weird beach, around Deadman's Point,
where there are haunted sea caves they say,
strange sea monsters have been sighted there,
so if travelling in the area, beware (beware, beware, beware)

[Sigmund, you are a horrible sea monster]
[Sigmund, you're through, get outta here]

          Meanwhile back on the beach,
Johnny & Scott are combing in the rocks,
unaware that behind them Sigmund lurks,
preparing to give them a shock.

BOO! In total surprise the boys eyes [ayeeeezzzzzz!]
          decide what can it be,
and then it moves and lo, it's a monster from the sea.

Now Sigmund the Sea Monster and Johnny & Scott are friends,
the finest of friends that ever can be on the land or on the sea.

[Now Sigmund the Sea Monster and Johnny & Scott are friends,
the finest of friends that ever can be on the land or on the sea..]"

-- YET ANOTHER THEME SONG --

       You better run,
       you better hide
       We gotta keep you
       Out of sight
       Be careful, Sigmund.

       Cover your tracks
       When you leave
       'Cause you know
       Zelda won't believe
       You friend is Sigmund.

       Who ever heard of
       A friendly sea monster
       Lovin' and laughin'
       His life away?

       You better run,
       you better hide
       We gotta keep you
       Out of sight
       Be careful, Sigmund.

       The other monsters
       Put you down
       'Cause you're not mean
       And now we've found
       A friend in Sigmund

       Who ever heard of
       A friendly sea monster
       Lovin' and laughin'
       His life away?

       The other monsters
       Put you down
       'Cause you're not mean
       And now we've found
       A friend in Sigmund

       He's alright
       He's out of sight
       He makes me smile
       I like his style
       I hope he stays awhile
       And he's doin' fine
       He's a friend of mine.

       You better run,
       you better hide
       We gotta keep you
       Out of sight
       Be careful, Sigmund
       He's a friend of mine.

Jodie Foster). The Kroffts lured teen idol JOHNNY into
accepting the role on "S&TSM" by promising him that he would
not only get to spend lots of time in the water, but also have
the chance t o sing. JOHNNY didn't get to scuba dive much, but
he did have the opportunity to sing his heart out. In fact,

chose SCOTT from the bunch to play his little brother. After
giving up acting, SCOTT KOLDEN worked for the phone company for
about ten years. These days he resides in the Los Angeles area
and has a career in sound effects -- creation and editing.

never regretted. I met wonderful people, got to see a world that many
only imagine, and have enough fabulous memories to last me forever. I
found out that Sid & Marty were looking for individuals to portray
character costumes when I was a senior in high school in northern
California. I responded to an inquiry that they had in a regional
newsletter distributed by Little People of America, and then several
months later they called and explained the series, etc. to my parents. I
lived in Los Angeles for three years and enjoyed it...but I knew that I
wanted to return to northern California, so I left in 1972. I married
Jack McKenzie, a member of the Little People of America, in 1989 and
moved to his home state of Texas. We have a beautiful 5-year-old
(dwarf). I miss California and am counting the years (6) until we can all
move back." -- Joy Campbell McKenzie

17a. Description:

Remake of the 1970's show "Land Of The Lost".

17b. Theme Song:

Our vacation began, mapping out a plan
But the map would never show, the danger down the road.
They felt that camper shakin, as they started breakin,
There's no where to hide, the ride of our lives...

Now we've crossed the line, fallin through time,
Living in the Land of the Lost,
What a world we found, deep underground,
Living in the Land of the Lost...

This world is strange and new, see the triple moons,
But don't you turn your back, or you'll become a snack.
Cause some Tyranasaurus could be hungry for us,
We need to make some friends, the wonder never ends...

Now we've crossed the line, fallen through time,
Living in the Land of the Lost,
We opened the door, found dinosaurs,
Living in the Land of the Lost...

24. Krofft Trivia (FAQs)

24a. Q: What does the H.R. in H. R. Pufnstuf stand for?
      A: ???????

      ---------
I've gotten a few answers to this, but none are positive answers,
only "most likely" or "probably". But here they are:

A1: "Honorable Regent, most likely, as he was the mayor of Living Island."
      A2: "His Royal, we hear."
A3: "The official word is, H.R. is "Royal Highness"...backwards."

      A4: Joy Campbell writes:
"I once asked Sid (and writer Si Rose) what the H.R. stood for,
           and they would never say!"

24b. Q: "What the heck were the names of Witchy Poo's Henchmen? "

A: Orson (a buzzard), Seymour (a spider), and Stupid Bat.

24c. Q: "I remember someone telling me that in the late 70's, there was a
Krofft theme park in Ohio? "

A1: [From the LOTL2 press kit]
"...the Kroffts conceived, designed and built the famous...World
of Sid & Marty Krofft, located in the Omni Complex in Atlanta [GA]."

      A2: [From thomas@vivid.net]
"I remember going to it when I was a little kid. My memory of
it is very hazy. It was at the top of the Omni Complex. CNN
Center is housed where it used to be. It was at the top of a
huge escalator, which is now closed. All I remember about it
was that you were greeted at the start by H.R. Puffinstuff,
and that there was a ride that was a big pinball machine. You
were in the pinballs and it shot you around. I also remember
that I thought it was a little dissapointing because I had
	 expected more rides."

24d. Q: "Where can I get video tapes of the Krofft Shows???"

A: At almost any video store. Several video stores carry
them, but most of them will order it for you if they
         don't have them.

24e. Q: In the Pufnstuf movie when JACK WILD is captured at the
Witches Convention, he is held by two witches. The witches
are both men! Are they SID & MARTY in a cameo????

      A: Joy Campbell writes:
The "mini" witches were Felix Silla and Andy Ratoucheff. But
during one of the scenes in Witchiepoo's castle, and you have to look
fast and quick, but there are gargoyles that are caricatures of Sid &
         Marty.

24f. Joy Campbell writes:
I also asked Si why my character was named CLING and why Angelo's character
was named CLANG...and he jokingly said that "ladies cling" and "men clang."

24g. Q: I remember hearing somewhere that Sid and Marty Krofft
sued McDonald's because they thought that the Big Mac's Mayor McCheese
character looked too much like H.R. Pufnstuff.

      A: ???????

25. H. R. Pufnstuf: The Movie

     [1970 UNIVERSAL PICTURES]

25a. Description:

Late on his way to band practice Jimmy (JACK WILD) crashes through the
bass drum of the band and his expelled. He walks into a forest and
throws away his flute. After his flute turns into a magic flute,
Freddie, they become the best of friends. On their way they meet a
boat and promptly climb aboard. Up in the sky is Witchiepoo who
changes her boat into a rotten boat and like the TV series the chase is
on. Jimmy lands on Living Island where he meets Pufnstuf and his
fellow, good guys. Witchiepoo's Vroom Broom runs out of fuel. After
the good guys' perform the number "Living Island" they retreat to
Pufnstuf's cave. Witchiepoo changes herself into the groovy chick,
Betsy Bugaloo. She nabs the flute leaving Jimmy and Pufnstuf to figure
a way to save Freddy. They respond by pretending Witchiepoo's castle
is on fire and manage to save Freddy and leaving her castle in dismay.
After Boss Witch calls via the Hot Line it is war for Witchiepoo.
After bombing the island the good guys' have a disaster meeting,
meanwhile Jimmy and Freddy decide to leave the island. Witchiepoo
disguises herself as a flower and captures the good guys'. Jimmy's
only hope to save everybody is to disguise himself as a witch and enter
the Witches Convention. He does, only to find Pufnstuf roasting on a
spit. If Witchiepoo gives Freddie to Boss Witch she becomes Witch Of
The Year. This she does and celebrates by singing Zap The World.
Jimmy (as Witch Beetle) is discovered and thrown into the dungeon with
everybody else. Googy Gopher saves the day and the good guys' sneak
away. They discover that the one thing that scares a witch is an angel
or good fairy. They all don costumes and scare the living hell out of
the witches. Witchiepoo loses her title as Witch Of The Year. In her
Vroom Broom she's about to throw her doomsday bomb onto the island when
it blows in mid air. Witchiepoo floats to the ground and the good
guys' sing in rejoice. The credits roll.

25d. Miscellaneous Facts:

     * MAMA CASS was Sid Krofft's next door neighbor.

     * The Pufnstuf motion picture coming attractions film trailer runs for 2
minutes. It features some scenes not featured in the final film.

     * A great moment in the movie: When JACK WILD is singing "Living Island"
and the characters form a guard of honour, a tree behind him has FEET!!

     * The Pufnstuf film ran in Adelaide for (Count them).....3 weeks. It
       opened in September 1971.

     * The Pufnstuf movie is not available in any country on video cassette.

     * The Pufnstuf movie soundtrack features a longer version of
"Zap The World" than featured in the film. JACK WILD sings
a verse after the first chorus. I'm not sure why because he
is captured before they sing the song in the film.

     * What they don't tell you on the Universal Studio Tour is that on
Colonial Street the house used in "Harvey" is the house Jack Wild runs
past in Pufnstuf, the house used in The Munsters is the house where the
dog runs down the front steps, and the Mansion used in Harvey as
Chumley's Rest is the exterior of the school in Pufnstuf. So there!!
The Mansion was located opposite the Parting Of The Red Sea back in
       1970.

     * Actor, ALLAN MELVIN, who voiced some of the characters in
the Pufnstuf Movie was the voice of Magilla Gorilla and starred
on screen as Alice's boyfriend, Sam, in The Brady Bunch.

     * DON MESSICK voiced Huckleberry Hound and the original pilot for
The Flintstones called The Flagstones among many other Hanna
       Barbera cartoons.

     * The movie was directed by HOLLINGSWORTH MORSE from a screenplay
by JOHN FENTON MURRAY and SI ROSE.

     * Songs written for the TV series by LES SZVARVAS would be dropped in
favor of the song writing team CHARLES FOX and NORMAN GIMBEL.
However the song "How Lucky I Am" (episode 2 "The Wheely Bird") was
retained but given a more funkier sound and used as an instrumental.

     * Two new characters were included in the film:
Googy Gopher - fully equipped with miner's hat and lamp.
Orville - Living Island's mail bird
(a pelican who carries the mail in his beak)

     * A couple of characters went through slight modification:
Pop Lolly was remade; The west wind wind was given a more
John Wayne feel; Stupid Bat was given a larger body; Pufnstuf was
given a cowboy hat that didn't fit.

     * Director HOLLINGSWORTH MORSE was married to SANDRA GOULD (the second
GLADYS KRAVITZ on Bewitched). This may explain BILLIE HAYES guest
       role on Bewitched.

     * The Pufnstuf movie script writer JOHN FENTON MURRAY wrote the Christmas
episode of "The Brady Bunch". (The one where Carol loses her voice).

     * The Krofft offices in LA have a copy of the movie on video but
the tape has broken so they have no viewable copy.
